The Institute D. Birago (Italy)

The Institute D. Birago offers three levels of schools: kindergarten, Primary School, and Lower secondary school. It’s located in Umbria, the region in the center of Italy and it includes two Municipalities, Passignano and Tuoro sul Trasimeno, on the lake Trasimeno, halfway between Florence and Rome. It has got pupils from 3 to 13 years and its number is almost 800. The majority of the pupils come from middle-class families.

In the Institute 15% of the students are from foreign families, above all from the countries of northern Africa and Eastern Europe.

The main economic activity is tourism, but it’s also important the agriculture activity is connected to the typical products of the hills such as vineyards and olive oil. There are also industrial and artisanal activities.

The most important goals of our training offer are the enhancement of our students; learning their academic success and the link with the productive realities of our territory. Therefore we give a lot of importance to the learning of foreign languages: especially the English that is taught from the second year of nursery school up to the third year of secondary school; a second foreign language (French) is taught in the three years of secondary school. For foreign students, there are special courses dedicated to the learning of Italian as a second language. Also, we have many activities to include students with special needs in the classes.

We think that citizenship skills are equally important and for this reason, we have established the Municipal Council of Boys and Girls in collaboration with the Municipal Administrations of the two Municipalities where our schools are located. In the last few years, we have worked a lot on the improvement of our digital tools thanks to the National Plan of Digital School: we have classes 2.0 equipped with tablets, and this year we received funding to provide the Institute withinnovative digital environments.

Finally, for many years all our schools have had the main purpose of making the new generations aware of respect for the environment in all its forms.
